Tips for positive Parent-Teacher Conferences
(some information taken from http://www.greatschools.net/LD/school-learning/parent-teacher-conference.gs?content=750)

  • Know the current status of your son or daughter…
Check your Zangle/Parent Connect account for updated grades, attendance, behavior, test scores, schedules, and contacts with teachers.  Knowing this information on a weekly basis is helpful in working with your son or daughter.  It will also help with understanding what questions to ask the teachers at conferences.  If you need your password, call the counseling office @ 328-6412.
  • What patterns or new information are you observing?
What subjects seem to be giving your student difficulties?  You may want to focus on what seems to be causing continued problems.  Ask the teachers when a good time for extra help may be offered whether in the tutor center or in Academic Enhancement (after school).  If you are seeing new developments in behaviors or study habits, please share this with teachers and/or your student’s school counselor.
  • Seek an understanding of the teachers’ policies and procedures…
Sometimes looking at Parent Connect can be confusing.  Ask the teachers to help you understand their grading policies and specific information regarding assignments or comments posted.
  • At the Conference
It is important that parents and teachers understand concerns as perceived from each individual role.  Sometimes a student behaves one way at home and another way at school.  Listen to what the teacher has to say about your student’s classroom performance.  If you seem to disagree with the report, politely share your reasons and discuss possible avenues for intervention.  Make arrangements for how and when you can communicate in the future (i.e. email, phone calls, notes, etc.).
  • “every student, every day”…
Mr. Vigil has shared with the Doherty community that the focus should be on students every day.  This means that students are actively engaged in the educational process at school.  The teachers, counselors, administrators, and support staff are available to help with instruction, tutoring, guidance, and problem solving.  Students need to be in class and ready to engage in the academic process.

Here’s to new things…

dohertylogowhiteemail We in the Doherty High School Counseling Department are excited about developing a more modern website and utilizing the technology that is available.  To that end we are embarking on the technology of blogs.   We have seen blogs mentioned on the local news or on several websites, but really, what are blogs and how do they work?  Our understanding is that blogs are basically journal type entries which afford us the opportunity to share information in a more unstructured manner.  We hope to do just that.  The information shared in the Doherty Counseling blog is intended to help with academic, personal, and social growth.  Let us know what you think - click comments below this blog to submit your thoughts.  We also want to encourage you to  visit our website (in development…more great things to come).
